Vorhes House

It is assumed that this home was built between 1820 and 1830; the actual date of construction is unknown due to a courthouse fire in 1844 that destroyed many records. It is a circa 1820s Federal style farmhouse that was located on Cornell Road near Kenwood Road in Blue Ash. It was acquired by the Miami Purchase Association in 1977 and opened to the public in 1978.

It is a substantial and well-built home, yet the family who lived in this home had to work hard to produce what they needed as it was located in what was a rural area at the time and they had limited access to the goods sold by traveling peddlers.

The Vorhes family had 13 children (11 girls and 2 boys). There are two rooms and two fireplaces on the first floor and three rooms and two fireplaces on the second floor. The home also has two narrow staircases called “winders.” The front room is the “best room;” however, a large family, like the Vorhes, would have had multiple purposes for this room. They would have received guests in this room; spinning and weaving work would have also been done here. The parents would have slept in the bed with a trundle; the children would have slept upstairs. The back room is the kitchen area, which is quite small to accommodate the large families that may have lived here. A second and separate kitchen was probably built near the home. The second floor is used for storage and is not open to the public.
