Education Outreach

Heritage Village Museum can provide your organization with a historical outreach program designed to fit your needs.  Each Outreach Program is 90 minutes in duration and designed for up to 50 participants.  Multiple programs may be scheduled, but require at least a 20 minute break between sessions. A standard outreach program highlights the life of a 19^th century resident of Southwest Ohio.

Up to six different hands-on activities are presented.  Docents, representing Heritage Village Museum, will arrive to present and oversee these activities. Additional supervision is required based on number of participants in order to ensure that the program is safe, effective, and fun. Students will need to use their skills in analysis to determine what an object might be and what it was used for. They will employ their writing skills to record the description of objects and practice their creativity  as well as dexterity by using quill and ink, or creating a quilt square.

Full day rate available upon request. Up to 30 students per session, per class period at $5/per student.

The Education Stations require a large area to set up, such as a gym, cafeteria, or meeting area, for student  movement, as well as 8 tables for the displays.

The  Kemper’s: A Pioneer Family in Cincinnati

Discover the Kemper family of Cincinnati. Arriving in 1791, this family was one of the first to strike out on their own into the wilderness of Walnut Hills. Learn how the Kemper’s tamed the wilderness, avoided conflict with Native Americans, what early Cincinnati was like, and how they made a home for  their family in the wilderness.

Hear all this and more as an interpreter dressed as James or Judith Kemper discusses the fascinating story of an extraordinary pioneer family and early Cincinnati history.

Giant United States Map Puzzle

This map shows the United States as it was in 1863. 31 individual, labeled states can be used to show the original colonies, westward expansion, or the secession of the southern states during the Civil War. The states are separate and can easily be repositioned for each  lesson.

A trained interpreter, in period clothing, will accompany the map to aid in this fun learning activity.

War of 1812 in Ohio

Cincinnati played a very important role in fighting the War of 1812.  Soldiers and supplies found their way North by way of Cincinnati.  Without this vital lifeline, the war effort in Northern Ohio, and the Western Theater, would have been severely hampered. Find out how Cincinnati helped save the day!

Students will gain understanding of early Cincinnati and surrounding areas, settlement and travel patterns, conflict with Native American Tribes, and its contributions to the War of 1812. Students will gain this knowledge through discussion, map use, primary sources, and the study of artifacts. Pre-teaching and post visit materials will be available upon request.
